Do you remember yourself at thirteen or fourteen years old? Around the time junior high ended and high school began? If you were anything like DESI and ROBIN—and I know I was—you were preoccupied with lip liner, curling irons, and the latest diet.

Like Desi and Robin, you may have even engaged in a daily tug of war with your insecurities. And sometimes…like me, the battle left you frustrated, hopeless, and fearful.

DESI, having moved to Shady Gully from Albuquerque, is miserable as she tries to adjust to small town life, while ROBIN, forever doomed at the "bottom of the popularity pyramid" is terrified she’ll never measure up.
 
When SUNNY, Desi’s flamboyant mother, sets out to paint a portrait of the girls, they’re adamant about the image they want to project: “Paint me skinny," Robin begs.

Paint me perfect. Paint me pretty. 

As they journey into adulthood, they eventually learn that the world’s prizes—beauty, recognition, and approval—are fleeting.

Once they're finally able to confront the mistruths that wrecked their lives, they end up at the beginning. To Sunny’s portrait…and to the truth that was there all along.

And with that truth they finally find the freedom to live unashamed.

And unafraid.
